'Land Of The Strays' Lets You Hike With 900 Dogs, Is Basically Paradise
It's like Nirvana for dog lovers.
Territorio de Zaguates aka "Land of the Strays" is one of the most magical places on Earth.
Territorio de Zaguates, located in year-round warm and sunny Costa Rica, is a no-kill shelter home to more than 900 stray and abandoned dogs. The organization is funded privately and run entirely by volunteers.
The best part: you can visit whenever they're open and go hiking with any of the 900 pups!
The organization is located in a massive expanse of outdoor space that is home to many scenic and beautiful hiking trails. The dogs get plenty of exercise. Just FYI: when you visit (because how could you not?), you can take home any of the dogs, because they're all available for adoption.
Although it's an amazing place, adoption numbers for Territorio de Zaguates have been down in recent years.
This is because most of the dogs are of mixed breed (or "mutts") and seen as "less valuable" than other pure bred dogs. To help show the public that mutts are special in their own ways and need love too, the organization began a campaign to give each dog its own unique breed name.
Names include "Alaskan Collie Fluffyterrier" and "Chubby-Tailed German Dobernauzer." If the names alone don't make you want to adopt them, I don't know what will.
Just look how cute all these unique dogs are!
Territorio de Zaguates of course allows for cuddles and lovin'.
The organization also spays and neuters all dogs, so they're doing their part to help control the dog population and find happy homes for the pups already running around the place.
Here's a taste of what a hike at Territorio de Zaguates looks like.
Can you imagine having so many lovely, beautiful dogs to play with? This is like a dog-lover's Nirvana.
Since the shelter is no-kill, you don't have to feel pressured to adopt. But how could you not want to take all 900 dogs home after a day in paradise with them?
All dogs have constant access to fresh water and an indoor facility and bedding, not to mention acres upon acres to run around in. There's probably no better place in the world to bond with you soon-to-be pet.
