This Sculptor's Work Looks Pretty Routine, But Look Closer And You'll Be Amazed

Tacoma, Washington-based artist and sculpture Jon Almeda has a deep passion for pottery. But his work isn't anything like most potters' you'll find. It may look similar at first, but after taking a closer look, the difference becomes clear.
Almeda specializes in ceramic miniatures, with many of his works small enough to rest on a quarter. You may think it gratuitous to make pottery than can't be used, but to Almeda, creating them is both more challenging and more satisfying. Because when it comes to pottery, in his words, "size does matter."
Almeda didn't always specialize in miniature pottery. It wasn't until years of sculpting that he'd even heard of it.
“While browsing a book store, I came across a book called ‘Creating Ceramic Miniatures‘..."
"That really changed my whole outlook and approach."
“Throwing small really allows me to focus on the shape and form of a piece."
"It is a very meditative form of creation.â€
Almeda even had to build his own custom designed motorized curio wheel just to be able to make them.
And we're glad he did, because his work is one of a kind.
