Across the globe, old architecture is being torn down in hopes of building more modern cities. But as these photos show, it's possible for both the past and the present to exist in harmony.
1. Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
PAST: Saigon Notre-Dame Cathedral. PRESENT: Modern buildings in downtown Ho Chi Minh City
2. Church Museum, Montreal, Canada
The church was beginning to crumble, when it was then transformed into a Museum and theater as a way to preserve it.
3. Sant Francesc Church, Spain
This church was built in the 18th century and was beginning to fall apart until architect David Closes stepped in and added a flare of modern design.

PAST: London's Bank of England. PRESENT: Modern skyscrapers
6. The Chicago Water Tower, built in 1869, and surrounding skyscrapers.
Although this water tower no longer has any use in the modern world, it sits amongst many buildings that aren't even half of its age.
7. Royal Ontario Museum Crystal Building, Canada
This museum was build in 1914 but has received many renovations since!

10. Wong Tai Sin Temple, Hong Kong, China.
This temple was built in the 1920's but as the city has grown on this early Taoist complex is still a major tourist attraction.

12. St. Mary Axe Church in front of the Gherkin, London.
The church in front of the Gherkin is about 800 years older.
13. Trinity Church and the Hancock Tower, Boston, USA
14. White House, Isle of Coll, Scotland
This farmhouse from the 18th century was restored by the Maclean-Bristol family and beautifully harnesses both the past and the present.

This ancient capital of China was founded in 495 B.C. and it's history goes for longer than most countries in our world, today.
18. Swansea Castle in front of the second tallest building in Wales
