Upcycling is exactly what is it sounds like: recycling something in a way that kicks it up a level and makes it the most awesome thing it can possibly be. When the rest of the world just saw a bunch of abandoned buildings or other structures, a few brilliant people saw the opportunities for some seriously mind-blowing upcycling.
1. Before: Underground bomb shelter
After: Urban farm
This shelter was located in London and Zero Carbon Foods built the farm there.
2. Before: Church, nearly destroyed
After: Lavish bookstore
A Dutch bookstore chain took over this church dated back to the thirteenth century. The result is pretty stunning.
3. Before: Abandoned train car
After: Chic apartment for an artist
Liz Mapelli was the lady to turn this car around, and the resulting apartment is insanely hip.
4. Before: Yaklovev 42 plane
After: Kindergarten classroom
Pretty great use of natural light!
The Georgian Airways planes are pretty spacious and have plenty of room for learning for these kids.
5. Before: Presbyterian church
After: Hoppin' bar
This slightly ironic revamped building is located in the Muswell Hill district of London.
6. Before: German airship hangar
After: Tropical Islands Resort
It now boasts the world's largest indoor RAINFOREST... that's right, indoor rainforest. Not a bad turn around for this air hangar.
7. Before: Water tower
After: Bed & Breakfast
The name of the B&B is now "House in the Clouds," which is an adorable plus for the building.
8. Before: Chicago meat packing plant
This building was one of many decaying buildings in the Chicago Meat Packing
After: Urban Farm
Entrepreneur John Edel was the mastermind behind the Peer building's transformation, and it is now home to 93,000-square-feet of indoor/outdoor farming.
9. Before: 1950s movie theater
After: Headquarters for Comvert, a clothing company in Milan.
The building was specially designed by architects from Studiometrico.
10. Before: 1960s train car
After: Adorable cafe located in South London.
11. Before: WWII Bunker
After: Gorgeous modern home
Elizabeth Sutton converted the building and kept it for herself... and I mean, who wouldn't!?
12. The Redpath Sugar Refinery Complex
After: Allez Up rock climbing and fitness center in Montreal
Allez Up now offers bouldering, belay training, lead climbing and is just an all around awesome climbing experience.
13. Before: Walmart
After: Public Library in McAllen, Texas
Possibly the biggest upcycle of the bunch! Which was your favorite?
